This year saw The Legear Sponsored, Emergency Services ice hockey team, the “Aussie Heat” compete against the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in two games. These games were part of the pre-game schedules for the annual USA vs Canada Ice Hockey Classic, being played in Sydney and Adelaide. The Ice Hockey Classic raises funds and awareness for the STOPCONCUSSIONS Foundation. This is the first year that the Aussie Heat have been invited to participate, and after discussions with their ADF counterparts, it was agreed to have the Sydney game as the premier representative teams from both sides, whilst the Adelaide game was primarily for the developmental teams, along with a few players on each side unable to play in Sydney.

The Sydney game boasted players (amongst others) from the Australian Ice Hockey League, East Coast Hockey league, former Australian representatives and even a former Olympian taking to the ice. It lived up to the promise of being a fast paced, action filled game with a close, 5-4 win going to the Aussie Heat. The Adelaide game was also a great game, with both teams trading goals for the first one and a half periods, before the more experienced Aussie Heat team drew away, with the final score being 13-7.

Prior to the Adelaide game, both the Aussie Heat and the ADF teams had the privilege of meeting Nathan Walker and his number one fan (his mother.) For those that don’t follow Ice Hockey, Nathan Walker is the first Australian Ice Hockey player to play in the United States National Hockey League. He is also the only Australian to have been on a Stanley Cup winning team, being the Washington Capitals in 2018. Both Nathan and his mother are big supporters of Australia’s Emergency Services personnel, as well as the ADF and both spent time just relaxing and having a chat with the players prior to the game.

Legear would like to wish the Aussie Heat players all the best as they prepare themselves to attend the World Police and Fire Games being held in Chengdu, China in 2019.
